Museme vs Story Bug

A cartoon hero in a holiday story, or your child painted twelve times.

Story Bug makes personalized story books for children aged 0 to 7: Christmas, birthday, bedtime and adventure stories in which your child is the cartoon hero, with parents in the story on many titles. You build the character from options such as skin tone and hair, and some newer titles can turn a photo into a cartoon avatar. You see the whole book before you pay. Museme makes one book, from one photo: your child is painted into twelve portraits inspired by twelve artists, each with a page about the artist, and every page is checked by a person before you see it.

A cartoon hero, or your child's own face

On Story Bug's classic titles you never upload a photo. You choose a skin tone, an eye color and a hairstyle, add one or two parents if you like, and write your own dedication. Some newer titles, such as the new Saves Christmas, also let you upload a photo and turn it into a cartoon avatar; their terms note that the result may not be an exact likeness. Either way, your child appears as a cartoon in a story.

Museme starts from one clear photo, and the child in the book is recognizably your child: their face, their hair, their expression. What changes from page to page is the art. Your child is painted twelve times, each in the style of a different artist, from Klimt's gold to Van Gogh's swirls to Basquiat's crowns, and each painting sits beside a short page about that artist.

A story for an occasion, or a first art book

Story Bug is built for occasions and for young children. There are titles for Christmas, Thanksgiving, Halloween and Easter, for birthdays and bedtime, and for babies. If you want a holiday story with your child as the hero, especially for a child under three, it fits better than an art book.

Museme suits a different gift: a keepsake that is also a first art book, for ages 3 to 10. It is not tied to one holiday, so it works for a birthday, Christmas or no reason at all. If you want your child to meet twelve famous artists and see themselves in each one, that is what it is for.

Price, preview and guarantee, side by side

Story Bug is cheaper: a classic softcover was $24.99 and a classic hardcover $34.98 when we checked, plus $7.99 US shipping, with free shipping on three or more books. You see the whole personalized book before paying, and you can pay for two-day or next-day delivery. Their site advertises "Love It or Your Money Back," but their terms limit refunds and reprints to faulty or wrong books reported within 90 days, so read the terms before you order.

With Museme you order first: one copy is $49.99 plus shipping to your country. All twelve pages of your child arrive by email within 24 hours, a person has checked every one, and nothing prints until you approve. Until then you can cancel for a full refund, and if the finished book still disappoints, we remake it free or refund you.

When Story Bug is the better choice

  • The child is a baby or toddler. Story Bug has titles for ages 0–2, and its stories are written for 0–7; ours is for 3–10.
  • You want a holiday or birthday story with your child as the hero, possibly with parents in it, at a lower price, or several books with free shipping.
  • You want to see the whole book before paying, would rather not upload a photo, or need two-day or next-day US delivery.

When Museme is the better fit

  • You want your child's real face in the book, painted from one photo, not a cartoon.
  • You want a book that is art and a first introduction to twelve famous artists, for a child aged 3 to 10.
  • You want a remake or full refund if the finished book disappoints, not only if it arrives faulty.
